킨들 언리미티드와 함께 요즘 Freida McFadden(프리다 맥파든)의 책을 하나씩 다 도장깨기하고 있어서 좋다. 책을 읽는 순간에는 정말 온전히 스토리에 집중할 수 있어서 좋은 것 같다. 시간을 보내기에도 좋고, 자연스럽게 일상 생활에서는 사용할 기회가 적은 어휘들도 한번씩 상기해볼 수 있다는 점도 장점이라고 생각한다. 이 책도 현재 아마존 북 세일기간이라서 아마 4.39 USD에 구할 수 있다. (Paperback 버전은 한화로 약 15,000원 정도) 바로 이전에 읽었던 The Inmate에 비하면 약간은 아쉬운 결말이라고 할 수 있지만, 마찬가지로 스토리를 구성하는 데 있어서는 정말 탄탄한 모습을 보여주었다고 생각한다. 마지막 저자의 말을 통해서 이번 작품을 완성하기까지 정말 많은 초안들을 거쳤고, 나름대로 오랜 시간이 걸려서 나왔음을 생각하니 읽어볼 수 있어서 참 좋다는 생각도 하게 되었다.

스토리가 전개되는 배경도 마음에 들었고, 중간중간 등장하는 이메일 요소도 꽤나 참신한 발상이라 좋았다. 중간에 Spotify가 언급되는 것을 보면서 정말 요즘 시대에 출판된 소설이라는 생각도 들어서 흥미로웠다. (다시 생각해보면 딱히 흥미로운 부분은 아닌데, 아무래도 고전소설을 읽을 기회가 많다보니 그런 것 같기도 하다) 초반부의 사건 전개가 굉장히 독자의 흥미를 잘 자극한다고 느껴져서 좋았고, 중간중간 Natalie나 다른 인물들의 행동을 보면서 많은 감정들을 느낄 수 있어서 지루하지 않았다. 게다가 많은 Thriler/Suspense 장르의 소설들이 그렇기는 하지만, 프리다의 명색에 걸맞게 사건의 실마리를 천천히 그리고 어느정도의 반전과 함께 전달하여 좋았다. 내가 가장 마음에 들었던 작품이라고는 생각하지 않지만, 막상 생각해보면 다른 결말을 제시했으면 그건 나름대로 또 너무 억지스러웠을수도 있을 것 같다. 얼른 다른 책들도 마저 읽고 싶은 마음이다.

I would say, this was a pretty solid thriller book with no doubt and yes I kinda enjoyed reading it. I guess one of the main characters, Dawn's personality was noticeably interesting to read and I suppose that factor made the story even more tempting for readers including myself as well. But the ending was not gonna lie a little bit offputting or more like not the way I expected from the beginning. Then do I have a better option that would perfectly work as a replacement? Nope, I do not. That is the reason why I physically cannot say Freida's decision was not the best. It wasn't the best of hers so far according to my experiences that has been going so lovely w all of her books. Yea, but it was another enjoyable book to try.

 

You know what? When I was trying to figure out what had happened between Natalie and Dawn before, I somehow figured that Mia Hodge which was a fake name of Amelia who got bullied by Natalie and Tara back in their high school period was related to all this going on. Some ppl could clock that Seth being Natalie's bf all of a sudden and him being a brother of Mia is kinda corny or implausible which I agree a little bit. Only bc the possibility is super duper low, even impossible, if all of that could've been done successfully after all those yrs and finally got their plan going on is crazy. Besides all that, It seems a pretty solid story to make the readers feel intrigued in an astonishing way which is one of the author's flair I believe. Would love to try some more of hers which I'm def going to read right away after this lol.
