The Inmate가 워낙 좋았어서 그랬는지는 모르겠지만, 이번 작품도 내가 평소에 Freida의 작품에 거는 기대에 비해서는 아쉬움이 남았다. 다만 초반부 전개는 다른 어떤 작품들과 비교해도 손색 없을 정도로 높은 몰입도를 보여줄 수 있었다고 생각한다. 그러다 보니 결말 부분으로 갈수록 어떤식으로 스토리를 풀어나가게 될지 궁금한 점이 많았는데, 조금은 전개가 느린듯한 느낌이 있고 만족스러운 결말은 아니었다. 갑자기 마구잡이로 끌어와서 책을 마무리 지으려고 하는 느낌? (물론 나는 Freida McFadden을 정말 좋아한다) 그래서였는지는 몰라도 킨들 언리미트 구독 기간에 읽기를 참 잘했다는 생각이 들고, 나중에 따로 소장하지는 않을 것 같다. 물론 프리다의 책들이 기본적으로 작품성은 다 갖추고 있기 때문에, 읽어볼 기회가 생긴다면 가볍게 읽기에 나쁘지 않다고 생각한다. 매번 다른 소재를 가져오는 것도 참신해서 좋고, 특히나 이번 작품은 약간은 아쉬운 결말이라고 할 수 있지만, 마찬가지로 스토리를 구성하는 데 있어서는 정말 탄탄한 모습을 보여주었다고 생각한다.

Nora의 감정표현은 정말 자연스럽게 텍스트로 표현된 것이 인상 깊었다고 생각한다. 여러 상황들 속에서 나타나는 감정들이 진솔하게 독자들에게 전달됨으로써 인물에 더 많은 공감을 할 수 있었던 것 같다. 뿐만 아니라 Nora가 굉장히 다면적인 모습을 포함하고 있어서, 하나의 시선으로만 그녀를 바라보지 않을 수 있는것도 책을 읽는 동안 흥미를 유지하는 데 많은 도움을 주었다고 생각한다. 술술 읽다가도 어라? 하는 순간들이 분명 있고, 그럼에도 작가가 설정해놓은 방향대로 독자만의 추리를 이어나갈 수 있는것을 종합적으로 생각해보면 책을 쓴 사람이 심어둔 장치들이 잘 작동한 것이지 않을까 싶다. 비슷한 맥락에서 정말 마음에 들었던 인물인 Brady 역시 이 작품에서 많은 역할을 했다고 생각한다. 정말 챕터 하나씩 넘어갈때마다 Brady를 향한 나의 마음이 계속 바뀌는 것이 신기하기도 했고, 그만큼 여러 디테일들을 저자가 많이 신경썼음이 드러나서 좋았다.

This book could be rated as a solid 3.5 out of 5 based on my personal experience and perception. In my opinion, the initial part of the book was captivating, introducing fresh and intriguing elements that piqued my curiosity. However, when it comes to a Thriller novel, I believe that the conclusion holds greater significance than the beginning. In this regard, the ending of the book did not meet my expectations in terms of the emotional impact it should have delivered. While I understand the buildup of resentment that the character Harper held towards her sister Nora Davis, who was unaware of her existence until later in life, I was underwhelmed when Harper, was revealed to be the perpetrator of various malicious acts.

 

Despite my admiration for the author Freida and her previous works, I felt that the revelation of Harper as the antagonist lacked the depth and nuance I had anticipated. Some readers may hold a different perspective, but this is my sincere opinion based on my reading experience. I had suspected that the character Brady might have been responsible for the events, and I was somewhat disappointed when the author used Harper as a plot twist, without providing sufficient foreshadowing or building credible suspicion around her character. It felt as though the author needed to conclude the story and hastily assigned the role of the antagonist to Harper, which, in my view, did not showcase the author's best work. Despite my reservations about this particular book, I remain interested in reading more of the author's future works.
