한강 작가님의 채식주의자를 1월달에 읽고 나서 자연스럽게 다른 작품들도 읽어보고 싶다는 생각을 했던 것 같다. 헬싱키에 있는 서점을 구경하다가 자연스럽게 선택하게 되었던 Greek Lessons (희랍어 시간)인데, 굉장히 의미있는 독서 경험을 할 수 있었다고 생각한다. 한강 작가님의 작품들의 특징인 것 같은데, 읽다보면 자연스럽게 그래서 스토리라인이 어떻게 흘러가는 건지 스스로 고민을 하게 된다. 그만큼 읽어 내려가면서 저자가 말하고자 하는 바를 찾기 위한 생각들이 이어지면서 자연스럽게 사고력이 확장되지 않을까 싶다. 언어와 존재의 교차점을 서로 다른 두 인물이 처한 상황을 통해 감각적인 문체로 풀어낸 작품이라고 생각이 들고, 채식주의자와 동일하게 나중에 기회가 된다면 원서인 한글 버전으로 읽어보고 싶다. 현재 Paperback 버전으로 14.5 USD에 (한화로 약 21,000원) 구할 수 있다.

희랍어 시간은 의사소통과 인간이 살아가면서 기본적으로 갖는 조건들의 본질을 깊이 있게 이야기를 통해 생각해볼 수 있게 한다. 굉장히 연결하기 쉽지 않은 소재들을 한데 모아서 이질감이 들 법도 한데, 오히려 그러한 요소들이 작품 안에서 더 온전히 기능을 발휘한다. 두 인물이 처한 세상과의 깊은 단절에서도 그들이 그리스어에 대한 참여를 통해 현대의 복잡성에서 벗어난 순수함과 명료함을 추구하려는 것이 잘 드러났다고 생각한다. 언어의 신체성이라는 것도 생각해볼 수 있는데, 우리가 의사소통을 할 때 말과 시각이 서로의 상호작용과 그 이해에 있어서 얼마나 중요한지를 잘 보여준 작품이라고 말할 수 있을 것 같다.

Greek Lessons by Han Kang? Lowkey poetic but also it hits deep. (ain't gon lie to yall) This book is all about two people who are basically losing the things that define them. (One's going mute, the other's going blind) They cross paths in a classroom where she's trying to learn Ancient Greek, and he's the teacher. I mean yall can say it sounds too simple but nah-ah it's more than that.

 

The girl, traumatized, withdrawn, and literally unable to speak, is trying to reconncect with words after losing her voice. Meanwhile, the guy is losing his sight and dealing with his own past. Their connection? Subtle but heavy. Han Kang writes in this quiet, melancholic way that makes YOU feel everything without needing to scream about it. It's jst solely abt language, isolation, and the weird ways we try to hold onto meaning when everything is slipping away.

 

Now, if youre looking for a fast-paced plot, this literally ain't it. This book moves slow like sit with your thoughts, stare out the window kidna slow. But honestly, that is the point. It's the sorta story that makes you reflect on how much we take words, sight, and even js being understood for granted. If ur into deep, introspective reads that make you feel like you've unlocked some existential truth, this one's for you LMAO.
