애슐리 엘스턴의 책은 올해 베스트셀러 라인에 오른 것을 보고 내용이 흥미로울 것 같아서 구매하게 되었다. 워낙에 스릴러/서스펜스 장르의 책을 좋아하기도 하지만, 한번에 베스트셀러 순위 1위에 오르는 것이 쉬운 일이 아닌데, 분명 많은 사람들의 입에 오르고 내릴 만한 요소가 있다고 생각하여 망설이지 않고 구매했던 것 같다. 물론 킨들 버전의 가격이 그때 당시에 완전 핫딜이었는지 1.14 USD에 구매할 수 있었다. (Paperback 버전은 한화로 구매하려면 약 22,500원 정도) 그래서 정말 킨들을 산 부가적인 이득을 톡톡히 볼 수 있었던 책 중에 하나라고 생각한다. 3월달에 이런저런 일들로 바빠서 책을 읽을 물리적인 시간도, 마음의 여유도 많이 부족했다. 그래서 한 70%까지 읽었다가, 며칠전에 아예 처음부터 다시 읽기 시작해서 금방 마무리할 수 있었다. 내용 자체가 굉장히 흥미롭고, 정말 탄탄한 구성이라고 생각해서 여러모로 생각할 부분들이 많아서 정말 추천하는 책이다. 일단 현재까지는 올해 읽었던 책 중에 가장 마음에 든다고 생각한다. (올해는 아직 길기 때문에 24년 후반부에는 바뀌어있을 수도 있을 것 같기는 하다)

한 명의 등장인물의 여러 이름 아래 있기 때문에, 이야기의 전체 구성이 유기성을 잃어버리기 쉬울 법도 한데 그러한 여지를 주지 않고 하나의 큰 스토리를 유지하는 것이 정말 인상 깊었던 부분이라고 생각한다. 글을 쓰는 문체나 사용하는 어휘를 보면 저자가 전달하고자 하는 분위기나 내용에 걸맞는 바이브를 더 잘 전달받을 수 있는데, 그런 면에 있어서도 빈틈없이 내용에 걸맞는 모습을 보여주었다. Lucca가 느끼는 감정들을 시시때때로 느낄 수 있어서 좋았고, 과연 누가 Mr.Smith일지 그리고 마지막까지 계속되는 반전이 정말 한번씩 내용들을 생각해보면서 너무 재밌게 읽을 수 있었던 것 같다. 정말 흔히들 말하는 Pageturner에 딱 들어맞는 책이지 않을까 싶고, 그리고 중간중간에 흘리는 요소들이 나중에 가면 연결되는 것도 책에 대한 흥미를 더욱 증폭시켜주었다고 말할 수 있을 것 같다.

나는 책을 읽을 때, 나의 주관과 감상에 최대한 솔직하고 명료하게 전달하려고 하지만 결코 비관적으로 접근하지는 않는다. 누군가는 작은 부분 하나하나까지도 짚어내면서 어떤 부분이 마음에 들지 않았는지를 마지막에 후기로 남길 수 있겠지만, 어쨌거나 나에게 있어서 책을 읽는 것은 정말 재미있고 좋아하는 일이기에 좋았던 부분에 더 초점을 맞추고 싶다. 올해 시간이 난다면 다시 한번 더 읽어보고 싶은 마음이 있다. 장르 자체는 Adult Thriller로 나오기는 했지만, 잔인하게 묘사되거나 너무 선정적이어서 (Yea I'm talking about the Fourth Wing and Iron Flame lol) 제한이 될법한 건 없다고 생각해서, 고등학생도 재밌게 읽을 수 있지 않을까 싶다. 안에 포함된 어휘 자체도 좋았고, 많이 어렵지 않아서 나처럼 서스펜스/스릴러 장르의 소설을 읽는 것을 좋아한다면 추천한다. 서평을 남기고 있는 현재 시점에도 베스트셀러 라인에 들어가 있는 것을 보면 많은 인기를 받고 있는 것을 체감할 수 있는 것 같다.

I would love to start this writing with how much I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from the beginning. Yes, I do love pretty much every Thriller/Suspense genre book, but that clearly doesn't mean every book is readworthy by any means. When I'm reading a book, I always check to make sure that the storyline is strong enough to make readers feel we are on the same page with the characters as well. On that note, this could be just me tho, I personally would love to read a book with a powerful sentence structure. This book just nailed it without making me feel unsure or confused by the author's words at all. I genuinely did sympathize with Lucca Marino who is the main character in this book, hearing her childhood life story and the reason why she'd started all this stuff to achieve her lifelong dream in the future makes me truly sad. Throughout the story, she'd been so smooth, yea if someone's gonna clock the fact that there were a few moments that she fumbled or was naive from time to time. But at the end of the day, she always did find to get away and make sure the job she requested finished successfully. That is a true talent I suppose.

 

PAGE 30: 'It's always best to keep the lie as close to the truth and say as little as possible, but this feels more than that.'

This is one of my favorite lines from the book. It naturally shows how Lucca handles the situations that she'll eventually face in this journey very well. I would rather not say she is the person who is morally always correct and not making any bad decisions at all. She seems like how to say, a morally gray person. And I do believe most of the ppl who live in current society also just like her including myself as well. Yeah, we all want to make the right decision and if we could, we would love to make a wise one. But sometimes, you gotta take care of your own sake first if that is related to your life or something seriously important.  We can judge the characters when we are reading books, but I felt and I still do feel Lucca's decisions were more reasonable considering the given circumstances she'd gotten already.

 

PAGE 122: 'The only one who cares about me is me. The only one who is going to make sure I survive is me. I am on my own.'
This one shows more how I personally handle the situations and how to live my life for sure. And like I just said, I'm very considerate about others' situations and their feelings as well. But If I had to choose one decision right now without an amount of time deliberating, I would probably pick anything that could help me out of danger. (I mean who wouldn't?)

Anyhoo, this was a lovely experience to read the book First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston who is the bestselling author on Amazon Bookstore. Devon and Lucca's chemistry keeps me entertained while I'm finishing the story, just it was beyond immaculate. Devon seems very considerate, thoughtful, and effortlessly good at systemic thinking which I really love when it comes to a character's personality. And I'd probably say this one contains numerous gag-worthy stuff to make you feel intrigued and gooped as well. I was trying to find out what was the real truth of the story from the get-go. And not going to lie, when I found out who is Mr.Smith, and how Ryan got involved in this story without letting readers know all that good stuff, I was truly audibly astonished in a good way. Keep reading, until you meet the last page of the book, and you will be able to get another surprising thing as well!
