지난달에 읽었던 Fourth Wing의 후속작인 Iron Flame, 아마존 킨들 차트에서 오랜 기간 동안 높은 순위를 기록하고 있다. 저자인 Rebecca Yarros의 대표 베스트셀러 작품으로, Young Adult / Adult 연령층을 위한 판타지 소설이라고 할 수 있다. 어렸을 때부터 책 읽는 것을 굉장히 좋아해서 그동안 정말 다양한 도서를 접했지만, 판타지 소설은 읽어볼 기회가 잘 없었다. 이번 기회를 통해서 처음으로 판타지 소설을 읽어볼 수 있어서 좋았던 것 같다. 전작인 Fourth Wing에 비해서는 다소 아쉬운 부분들이 조금 있어서 내가 읽으면서 느꼈던 것들도 간략하게 남겨 보려고 한다. 아마존 킨들 스토어에서 15$ 정도에 구매한 것 같다. (Paperback 버전은 한화로 약 34,000원)

 
 

 
일단 전작인 Fourth Wing과 동일하게 전반적인 스토리 구성이나 요소들은 이번 작품에서도 그대로 이어진다. 새롭게 등장하는 인물들도 많이 있었고, 스토리가 변화함에 따라 이동하는 장소도 여럿 등장하는데 뭔가 개연성이 떨어진다는 느낌을 받았다. 판타지 소설이라서 현실에 있을 법한 일이 아니니 개연성이 떨어진다는 말이 아니라, 소설 안에서 일어나는 일들끼리의 상관관계가 부실하다는 인상을 받았던 것 같다. 갑자기 지난 작품에서 죽었던 Jack Barlowe가 살아서 돌아오지를 않나, 뭔가 억지로 인물들 간의 갈등 관계를 만들기 위해 집어넣은 장면들이 있다고 느꼈다.

그리고 주인공인 Violet의 성격이 독자들이 충분히 예측할 수 있는것은 좋지만, 너무 명백하게 생각한 대로 흘러가는 것도 어딘가 심심한 부분이 있었다. Xaden이 Violet에게 하는 문장들이 약간 오글거리는 것도 호불호가 갈릴 것 같다. (소설이라서 재밌게 읽을 수 있던 것 같기도 하다) 자극적인 요소가 적절하게 들어가 있는 것은 좋지만, 너무 이것저것 독자들의 주목을 받기 위한 요소들이 난잡하게 하나로 이루어져 있는 것 같아서 아쉬운 점이 있었다.

I have some thoughts on the novel Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros. While I thoroughly enjoyed the previous book, Fourth Wing, this time I found myself a bit taken out of the story. One issue I have is the abundance of characters, some of whom seem redundant and unnecessary to the plot. Overall, this detracted from my experience as a reader.
 
Let's be honest here. We're all familiar with Violet's personality and how she handles certain situations, especially those involving Xaden. It's become quite predictable at this point, making it easy for us to anticipate her next move. And when you're reading a book and can predict what will happen next, it can be disappointing. Readers want to be entertained and experience an element of surprise. However, despite this issue, I found the story to be quite amusing and engaging enough to finish the book. Whether or not I recommend this series depends on the reader. If you enjoy fantasy novels, then it's worth a read. But if it's not your thing, you might find it to be a waste of time and money.
